PlaYiNg a NeW TuNe in the WorkPlace - Yellow Submarine
posted Friday, October 3, 2008 8:00 PM
Take a trip with the Beatles in their Yellow Submarine to the depths of the ocean and discover an amazing lesson in adaptability. As we submerge together click on www.rapshody.com and listen to the original version of the tune whose refrain begins with "We all live in a yellow submarine" (Anyone for a sing a long?) We are now submerged eight thousand feet below the surface on the ocean floor. No - I'm not talking about our current experiences in the stock / credit or the job markets. Though, we could draw some comparisons. At this depth sight is useless and the blood runs cold in freezing waters. We are close to vents releasing heat in excess of 570 degrees from the earth's core. Proteins and DNA simply fall apart and enzymes melt away. (I felt like that...let's see.... maybe after the first bail out vote failed this week!) I am talking about learning from one of the smallest creatures on earth. Oceanographic scientists have discovered colonies of living organisms not only surviving but thriving and reproducing under these conditions. Why? At some point in their existence - as conditions changed - they had to change too! Now that is a lesson in adaptability that gives me hope! At CWT* we've learned that wither you are a worker or an employer Change is Constant. We change constantly and so does the world around us. Become adaptable, keep your skills current and seek out opportunities to learn new skills. The result is adaptability! If your feeling like you're on the ocean floor without a submarine remember YOU CAN ADAPT! It's been done before and if you let yourself you can evolve and thrive again. Don't give up! Workers.... Join us at CWT* for Boomers in Demand Summit - Thursday October 16, 8:30am - 1pm. It's FREE, Fun, Informative and planned to equip you with adaptability skills. You'll have the opportuntity to Speed date Boomer friendly employers who are looking for adaptable people for their job market. Skill building classes will help equip you to evolve in a constantly changing workplace. Employers... You are invited to CWT* on this same date to adapt needs in your workplace to a ready pool of workers being prepared to recareer with you. You'll be able to tell your story in a large group setting plus network with Boomers at your display area. There is NO Charge for participating. Workers & Employers are invited to Gateway Community College's Career Center Job Fair October 29 10am - 1pm. Over 1,000 attended our last Job Fair on campus. Go to www.boomersindemand.com for more information and to register or call The Center for Workforce* Transition at 602-286-8158 Next time on PlaYiNg a NeW TuNe hear from someone who is recareering and playing a NeW TuNe after 30 years in the construction business. Why? He's discovered that Learning is Ongoing if you realize and adapt to the fact that Change is Constant.

Are you discussing politics at work?

Let me start by telling you that I spent my formative teen years in the South. South Louisiana to be more specific. Where "laissez les bon temps roulez" attitudes casually intermingled with Cotillion lessons on what it means to be a lady. So early on I learned that it wasn't polite to talk about politics or religion outside of your immediate circle -- and particularly not at work. Looking back, I realize that given Louisiana's colorful political history, this social norm may have actually been more rooted in keeping the status quo -- but I digress...
I have to admit that I have lived pretty peacefully with the "don't ask, don't tell" philosophy. When people at work would start talking politics -- even if I agreed with what they were saying -- I would find a way to politely bow out of the conversation. Yes, there were times when someone would say something particularly narrow-minded, disturbing, or just flat out wrong. But I would always keep my political ideas to myself. Until now. If you want to see what has changed my mind, read "In this economy, is our hindsight still 20/20?" on my Breakroom blog. So this has me curious.
I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm ready to talk about it!
What a Week

Wow. What a week. If you are like me then you’ve been glued to every media outlet trying to glean just a bit more information about our markets, political climate and exactly how the collapse and take-over of so many financial institutions will impact us all. I don’t pretend to be an economist, but the lack of consumer confidence and market stability of the past week has me thinking a lot more about my own financial situation and what I’m looking for in, not only our next president, but all of our federal, state and local leaders. It’s been a week that has many people talking and asking questions….questions about why the “Bailout” bill failed, whose fault it was, what can be done to pass a “Rescue” plan, and questions surrounding the fundamentals of Wall Street.
These are all questions and topics that are going to continue to directly impact Young Professionals as we navigate our own financial strategy and decide who will lead us through this economical storm. Some of the questions I’ve found myself thinking about are: how safe is my 401K /IRA? How much do I really need in savings? What is going to happen to my home value? How does this financial climate affect my parents who are very close to retirement age? How is this going to affect my taxes? Who do I believe is the most qualified candidate to help us get out of this mess? These are questions that I think many Young Professionals are asking themselves, and as we ask these questions it becomes abundantly clear that Young Professionals would greatly benefit from a network of resources to help us make very well-educated personal decisions. Having been a part of GET Phoenix for a year and a half I know I have that outlet of these exact resources. You see, GET Phoenix offers not only a network of Young Professionals within the Phoenix metropolitan area, but it also provides educational seminars on personal finance planning , job hunting resources and political panels to hear directly from local candidates about the ballot initiatives they support. It’s an organization that has pretty much everything a Young Professional could be searching for; community, connectivity, and resources. In this time of political and economical uncertainty I feel very fortunate to be involved with GET and I hope you will too get involved! Please join us at one of our upcoming events! We are going to be meeting at Burrton Barr Library on Friday, October 3 rd for Phoenix’s First Friday’s from 6pm-10pm and we will also be hosting a social networking happy hour at Coach and Willy’s on Thursday, October 16 th from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Individual memberships start at $75 annually. For more information please visit us at www.getphoenix.org.
