I recently started a short video on first jobs based on the interviews done on the Pursue the Passion Tour. What I was surprised to find was that most of our interviewees didn’t generally succeed their first time out. Their first jobs were primarily obstacles or learning experiences that simply contributed to the overall journey.
With that said the video quickly became a compilation of stories about obstacles. He dropped out of school and wound up taking a job in road construction. While Joel liked the work he began to wonder about his desire to pursue it long term. Ten years after dropping out Joel went back to school and chased down a dream. Here's his story. Posted: 12/11/2008 One of the hardest aspects of zeroing in on a career that we can be passionate about is simply discovering where our interests lie. Throughout the course of the Pursue the Passion Tour we found that almost everyone we interviewed was able to link their current career with a childhood interest. Here is a short compilation of their stories. Posted: 11/20/2008 Pursue the Passion Interviewed Tommy Thwaits in Denver, Colorado in front of a live student audience. Tommy is the owner of Coda Coffee, a coffee wholesale co. that he owns and operates with his brother Tim. In this video Tommy speaks about his journey in the coffee industry and the risks he took to preserve his passion. Posted: 11/12/2008 Business travelers and Denver International Airport speak to Zach Hubbell and Brett Farmiloe of Pursue the Passion about their worst flight experiences. Posted: 11/10/2008 Brett Farmiloe and Zach Hubbell of Pursue the Passion were recently held up at Denver International Airport in Colorado. They decided to use their layover to find out what the more experienced think of business travel. Posted: 11/3/2008 This fall over 1,000 students are participating in the "Pursue the Passion" program. Students will be going out and conducting interviews with professionals in fields they're interested in. Video, blogs and write ups will then be posted on www.pursuethepassion.com, creating a user generated career resource for students and young professionals. Posted: 10/21/2008 Pursue the Passion has teamed up with Collins College to offer four media internships to Joseph Serrano, Anthony Garrido, Mike Lyons, and Brian Hugaboom. The four students interview people in the community who have jobs they want. Steven Wolff, Visual FX Artist, has worked on movies like X Men and Usher music videos. It's safe to say these guys would love his job. Posted: 10/8/2008 Pursue the Passion spoke to a couple hundred FBLA students recently to get them excited about doing PTP interviews, and one student got his opportunity to interview sooner than expected. During a game of 'Collide-a-Scope,' he dislocated his kneecap and was carted off to a local hospital in an ambulance. He ended up interviewing the paramedic on the way.

Posted: 9/30/2008 Christopher Barr started off his career as a photojournalist. Christopher’s work took him around the world in his twenties, visiting such places as Indonesia, Thailand and China. It was a trip into the Amazon Rainforest on which he got lost, became ill and almost missed his pickup home that he decided to search for work domestically. Christopher started shooting portraits in Hollywood California and has since become one of the premiere photographers in the country. In May 2009 the Jobing Foundation will be presenting Experience Your Future Day, a hands on career experience for thousands of 8th graders in the Phoenix area. 8th graders from the Ward Traditional Academy, here in the valley, speak about what they would like to do when they grow up and their questions surrounding those ambitions. Posted: 9/10/2008 Leon Young has spent the entirety of his professional career working with one organization. Starting as a night security guard he proceeded to learn all facets of "hospitality 101" while working for Starwood Hotels. His tenure with the company also allowed him to become an authority on the culture and processes of his organization. He now works as a GM for the company he started with over 20 years ago. In this video Leon speaks about some of the more significant turning points in his career. Posted: 9/4/2008 Jim Sherraden currently manages the historic Hatch Print Shop, the oldest print poster shop in the world. He speaks about finding his passion at a time in his life when he need it most. Speaking to his love for history he now gets to take part in the preservation and production of historic memorabilia on a daily basis. Posted: 8/22/2008 Lonnie Williams Jr. grew up in Tucson, AZ and stayed in state to attend The University of Arizona on a football scholarship. Realizing athletics was not something he would be able to do as a profession Lonnie committed himself to his dream of becoming a lawyer. A graduate of Yale Law School Lonnie was recently named a Southwest Super Lawyer and has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America since 1995. In addition he has written for Rolling Stone and been a contributing editor to Playboy since 1981. The oral historian speaks about his experience being an independent journalist and one's ability to dictate their own career path. In 2008 he released his newest book, "All for a Few Perfect Waves: The Audacious Life and Legend of Rebel Surfer Miki Dora". Josh Olson wrote the screenplay for the Oscar nominated "A History of Violence" and more recently one of five animated Batman shorts on the DVD "Gotham Knights". He speaks about being an aspiring writer and the nature of the creative process. Last summer 4 recent college graduates, discouraged by their professional experience out of school, set out on a cross country road trip to find answers. 16,000 miles, 100 days and 200 interviews later, this documentary chronicles their experience Pursuing the Passion. Brett Farmiloe and Zach Hubbell of PTP will be speaking at the Arizona State SHRM conference this Tuesday, telling their story and the steps they learned to achieve ones passion.
